Mammals

Numerous mammals have received prosthetic limbs or other cybernetic enhancements to improve quality of life or enable research:

  • Dogs: Many dogs have received prosthetic legs after accidents or cancer treatments. Organizations like OrthoPets provide custom prosthetics for canine patients, allowing them to run, play, and live active lives.
  • Cats: Feline patients have received prosthetic limbs and even ear prosthetics after cancer surgery or trauma.
  • Elephants: Motala, an elephant who stepped on a landmine in Thailand, received a prosthetic leg and has become an ambassador for elephant welfare and landmine awareness.
  • Dolphins: Perhaps the most famous non-human cyborg is Winter the dolphin, who lost her tail in a crab trap and received a pioneering prosthetic tail that enabled her to swim normally again. Her story inspired the movie "Dolphin Tale."
  • Horses: Prosthetic limbs have been developed for horses suffering from injuries or congenital defects, allowing them to walk and even perform dressage.
  • Sea Turtles: Injured sea turtles have received prosthetic flippers made from materials like marine-grade stainless steel and specialized plastics to help them swim and survive in the ocean.

These prosthetics are often customized using 3D scanning and printing technology, allowing for lightweight, durable solutions that accommodate the unique anatomy and movement patterns of each species.

Insects

Researchers have created cybernetic insects for various applications, from search-and-rescue to environmental monitoring:

  • Cyborg Cockroaches: Scientists at institutions like North Carolina State University have implanted electrodes in cockroaches to control their movement via remote control, potentially using them to search disaster sites for survivors.
  • Bee Backpacks: Researchers have attached tiny radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to honeybees to track their movements and study colony behavior, pesticide effects, and pollination patterns.
  • Locust Sensory Enhancement: Experiments have involved implanting electrodes in locust antennae to detect explosives or chemical compounds, leveraging their highly sensitive olfactory systems.
  • Biobots: The term "biobot" refers to living organisms integrated with electronic components, such as moths with implanted sensors for environmental monitoring or dragonflies with tiny backpacks for navigation studies.

These cybernetic insects raise ethical questions about manipulating living creatures for human purposes, but proponents argue they can save lives in disaster scenarios or provide valuable ecological data.
